Orchestra
"Utopia" is an international festival orchestra founded by conductor Teodor Currentzis, bringing together the finest musicians from around the world.
The Utopia Orchestra is an independent ensemble, unaffiliated with any institution—an idealistic attempt to find a new approach to music-making. In Utopia, concertmasters from various orchestras, soloists, and musicians performing with the world's leading ensembles dedicate themselves to meticulous creative exploration, where serious preparatory and research work is considered as important as flawless technique.
Utopia's first concerts took place in October 2022 at major European venues: the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Laeiszhalle Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Berlin Philharmonie. The project brought together 116 musicians from 30 countries, performing works by Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel.
Since then, the Utopia Orchestra has presented several new programs: Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3, Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto, and Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. The ensemble also debuted at the Salzburg Festival with concert performances of Henry Purcell's opera *The Indian Queen* and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Great Mass in C minor. For this project, Teodor Currentzis specially formed a choir, uniting 40 vocalists from 14 countries.
Utopia performs in the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, the Megaron Athens Concert Hall, and the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, among others.
In 2024, Utopia will present three new programs. In May, the orchestra will perform Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 in Berlin, Hamburg, and Athens. In the summer, the Utopia Orchestra and Choir will return to the Salzburg Festival to present Johann Sebastian Bach's oratorio *St. Matthew Passion* and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's *Don Giovanni* in a production by Romeo Castellucci. In the autumn, Utopia, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, will present its interpretation of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5.
In the winter of 2025, the Utopia Orchestra and Choir, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, will participate in a production of Jean-Philippe Rameau's opera *Castor et Pollux* at the Paris Opera (directed by Peter Sellars). Additionally, in 2025, the orchestra will present Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 and Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 with Alexandre Kantorow as the soloist.
